I've been working on an embroidery project at the moment based on a pattern designed by another embroidery artist. She provided a detailed colour guide, but I didn't have all the colours she suggested in my stash and I didn't want to buy new colours so I found the best matches from my stash. But if you are designing your own pattern, or using one of my free patterns where I leave the colour choices up to you then you'll need to make some decisions about the colours you use.
This blog post discusses finding the 'right' yellow.
Here I give some ideas about ways of exploring colour combinations in your embroidery projects.
And this blog post has some tips about picking colour palettes.
I've got plenty of other blog posts about colour (and other aspects of embroidery) so I encourage you to browse through the embroidery tips page on my website.
