Understanding embroidery needle sizes

October 15, 2025

In most cases, it doesn’t matter which needle you use for embroidery, but it is useful to understand a bit more about needle size so that when necessary, you can pick the best needle for the job.

Embroidery needles come in different sizes to accommodate different types of fabric and thread. Using a needle that is the right size ensures the thread passes smoothly through the fabric. A needle that's too big can create unsightly large holes, while a needle that's too small can be difficult to thread and may cause thread to fray or bunch on the fabric.

Embroidery needles have a numbering system for size. The larger the number, the smaller/thinner the needle. A size 9 needle, for example, is smaller than a size 12.

Thinner needles should be paired with fine thread such as silk or one strand of cotton floss. The more strands of floss or for thicker thread such as perle cotton then a larger needle should be used.

If you want to find out more about needle types and sizes, John James, a needle manufacturer, has a great guide on their website.
